Le d\u00e9part\na eu lieu du port norv\u00e9gien de Troms\u00f8. Environ 600 experts vont se relayer sur\nle navire, qui doit parcourir 2&nbsp;500 kilom\u00e8tres en 390 jours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La mission mobilise 60 instituts\nde 19 pays et se voit dot\u00e9e d\u2019un budget de 140 millions d\u2019euros. &nbsp;L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe scientifique est dirig\u00e9e par\nl&rsquo;Institut Alfred Wegener et le Centre Helmholtz pour la recherche polaire et\nmarine (AWI). Elle a pour objectif d&rsquo;\u00e9tudier le climat arctique de mani\u00e8re\napprofondie et, en particulier, de permettre la collecte de donn\u00e9es durant les\nmois d\u2019hiver et de printemps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ces donn\u00e9es seront pr\u00e9cieuses pour\nmieux comprendre la contribution de cette r\u00e9gion \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9volution du climat. En\neffet, le r\u00e9chauffement climatique est particuli\u00e8rement fort en Arctique. La\nglace recule de mani\u00e8re spectaculaire. Mais les processus impliqu\u00e9s dans cette\ncatastrophe sont tr\u00e8s difficiles \u00e0 d\u00e9chiffrer pour les climatologues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La date du d\u00e9part a \u00e9t\u00e9 fix\u00e9e au\nmoment o\u00f9 la couche de glace est la plus fine, de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 permettre au navire\nd\u2019avancer le plus loin possible dans les r\u00e9gions polaires. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Un navire pi\u00e9g\u00e9 dans la glace<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>La mission a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9e MOSAiC,\npour <em>Multidisciplinary drifting\nObservatory for the Study of Arctic Climate<\/em> (observatoire multidisciplinaire\nd\u00e9rivant pour l\u2019\u00e9tude du climat arctique). Le navire restera prisonnier des\nglaces et d\u00e9rivera pendant de longs mois avec la banquise. Son parcours ne peut\n\u00eatre v\u00e9ritablement connu d\u2019avance. Les chercheurs construiront un r\u00e9seau de\nstations sur la glace autour du <em>Polarstern<\/em>,\n\u00e0 une distance allant jusqu\u2019\u00e0 50 kilom\u00e8tres. Ces stations automatis\u00e9es recueilleront\ndiff\u00e9rents types de mesures. Elles d\u00e9riveront avec le navire, \u00e0 plus de 1&nbsp;000\nkilom\u00e8tres des premi\u00e8res terres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Une interaction climatique complexe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Des cristaux de glace se forment dans\nla couche superficielle de l\u2019oc\u00e9an. Plus l\u00e9gers que l\u2019eau liquide, ils montent\nvers la surface o\u00f9 ils s\u2019agglom\u00e8rent. Une bonne compr\u00e9hension de ce m\u00e9canisme,\net plus g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement des transferts caloriques entre l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an et l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re, est\nimportante pour notre capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 pr\u00e9voir les \u00e9volutions climatiques. En effet,\nles courants marins transportent de grandes quantit\u00e9s d\u2019\u00e9nergie des latitudes temp\u00e9r\u00e9es\nvers l\u2019Arctique. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Des craquelures d&rsquo;eau libre se\nforment constamment dans les glaces polaires. Certaines perdurent, tandis que\nd&rsquo;autres se referment rapidement. En \u00e9t\u00e9, cette eau libre absorbe les rayons\nsolaires, tandis que la chaleur et l&rsquo;humidit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an se dissipent dans\nl&rsquo;air. Les chercheurs s&rsquo;int\u00e9ressent \u00e0 ces \u00e9changes \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques, ainsi qu\u2019aux\nprocessus de transport, de d\u00e9formation et de fonte de la glace au cours du\ncycle annuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les \u00e9changes gazeux entre l\u2019oc\u00e9an\net l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re sont un autre sujet d\u2019\u00e9tude essentiel. Ils concernent bien s\u00fbr\nle dioxyde de carbone, mais aussi le m\u00e9thane, les oxydes d\u2019azote, etc. Certains\ngaz produits par les algues joueraient aussi un r\u00f4le important, et mal compris,\ndans le r\u00e9gime des pr\u00e9cipitations. De plus, de grandes quantit\u00e9s de m\u00e9thane sont\nlib\u00e9r\u00e9es par le d\u00e9gel du permafrost le long des c\u00f4tes sib\u00e9riennes. Ce gaz est\nentrain\u00e9 vers l\u2019Arctique par les courants oc\u00e9aniques. On ignore quelle part se\nd\u00e9compose dans le milieu marin et quelle quantit\u00e9 de ce gaz tr\u00e8s nocif pour le\nclimat se r\u00e9pand dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discrets tr\u00e9sors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Le <em>Polarstern<\/em> \u00e9tudiera \u00e9galement le plancton, des organismes discrets\net mal connus sur lesquels on sait finalement peu de choses, bien qu\u2019ils soient\nun des premiers maillons de la chaine alimentaire oc\u00e9anique. Ces petits\norganismes survivent aux rudesses de l\u2019hiver polaire puis se multiplient\nrapidement lors de la fonte des glaces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contraintes techniques<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Quatre navires brise-glaces et\ndeux avions seront utilis\u00e9s pour le ravitaillement et le transport de\npersonnels. Une piste d\u2019atterrissage sur glace de plus d\u2019un kilom\u00e8tre de long sera\ndonc construite \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 du bateau. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le <em>Polarstern<\/em> est un bateau allemand entr\u00e9 en service en 1982. Il\nmesure 118 m\u00e8tres de long, p\u00e8se 12&nbsp;000 tonnes \u00e0 vide et embarque un\n\u00e9quipage de 44 personnes, auxquelles s\u2019ajoute une cinquantaine de chercheurs. On\nestime que le navire, m\u00eame \u00e0 l\u2019arr\u00eat, consommera environ 15 tonnes de carburant\npar jour pour assurer le chauffage et le fonctionnement de ses \u00e9quipements dans\nun environnement hostile dont la temp\u00e9rature peut descendre \u00e0 -50\u00b0C. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ce navire de recherche\nexceptionnel peut se frayer un passage dans une \u00e9paisse couche de glace d\u2019un\nm\u00e8tre et demi. Il disposera de deux h\u00e9licopt\u00e8res embarqu\u00e9s permettant\nd\u2019assurer, entre autres fonctions, l\u2019installation et la maintenance des\nstations de mesure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Les donn\u00e9es<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 partir du 1er janvier 2023,\ntoutes les donn\u00e9es collect\u00e9es par MOSAiC seront disponibles gratuitement.
